Recently I have taken a liking to less ‘mainstream’ films and thought I would share some lovely movies that I stumbled upon recently.
1) The Way He looks. This is a Portuguese film (some versions have subtitles) that has been described as a ‘coming of age romantic drama’ about a blind boy trying to navigate both friendships and his sexuality. I don’t want to give anything away, but it is an absolutely wonderful ‘feel good’ movie that will not leave you disappointed!!!
2) In Your Eyes. This is another movie that is a romantic drama (I don’t like watching action movies on my laptop!!!), but it is very very distinct from “The Way He Looks”. It has been described in a ‘merging of minds’ and follows the growing friendship between two telepathically connected individuals who are on opposite side of the US. One being a repressed, young housewife and the other a young man who just got out of prison. Warning, this is one of your more stereotypical romance movies (my dad didn’t like it!), but I found it refreshing, because it is very unique and doesn’t focus on the physical components of a relationship.
3) Obvious Child. Yes, this is another movie with a romantic focus (sorry), but it is more of a comical approach with crude humour, so again, it is very different from the movies above. The main character is an awkward young (ish) women who is a stand up comedian and is ‘floating’ in life. After a drunken escapade early in the movie she gets pregnant and quickly decides that she will get an abortion. This is a movie that is awkward, cute and funny all at the same time. I liked it because it felt like it was more realistic, that this could be a life of someone you know, and that (contrary to hollywoods message), not always do couples run off into the sunset to live happily ever after. Although this is probably my least favourite of the 3, as a minimum, it is worth watching the trailer.
If you end up watching any of the movies (my preference, is in the listed order), I hope you enjoy them! 🙂
