Top 5 things people say when you tell them you are going to medical school…

1) “What do you plan to specialize in?”

Me:  “I’m not sure yet, bit too early to say.”

Them: “But if you had to choose now what would you pick?”

Me: “I’m not sure, maybe: ____, ____ or ____.”  [lists 3 random specialities]

Them:  “Why do those specialities interest you?”

Ahhhhh…

2)  “Wow that is a lot of schooling! How long will you be in school for?”

Me: “Well to get an MD is 4 years then the length of residency varies, usually 3+ years.”

Them: “That is so long! I don’t know how you do it!”

Me: “Ya…”

3)  “I have this pain in my _______  do you think it could be ______ “

Me:  “I’m not sure I haven’t started medical school classes yet.”

Them:  “No, but what do you think?  Do you think it is possible that it could be ____ ???”

I can hardly tell the difference between a freckle and a mole, you would have just as much luck having a high school student diagnose you.

Me:  “I’m sorry, I am really not sure…maybe you should ask your doctor?”

Them: **give you ‘the look’**

4)  “Wow you must be brilliant”

Me: “Ahh…no…”

Them:  “I am sure you are”    **gives you the ‘knowing smile’ **

No…I’m really not….

5) “My cousin’s husband’s brother is a doctor!!!”

Me: “That’s cool!”

Long story short…when someone asks you, “what do you do?”

Instead of saying, “I am going to medical school”

The better answer is, “I’m going to get my doctorate in human health”

Them: “What’s that???”
